Who are the KYA?

KYA is the youth section of the konkani community and hence the name ‘ KONKANI YOUTH ASSOCIATION’.

Our Mission Statement:

Our mission is to unite the youth of the konkani community, in order to support, help and share common cultures, customs, religion, feelings and ideas.

Our Objectives:

  • Educate the cultural needs of the youth.
  • Share religious beliefs and practices.
  • Share knowledge and experiences to enhance and broaden the education in general, and cultural education in particular.
  • Support emotional situations amongst the youth and help each other.
  • Provide leisure activities and entertainment.
  • Welcome and support the youth of new families and the new youth of existing families.
  • Aid the transition of members from the youth of KYA to the adult konkani sabha in order to continue the life of the sabha and the interaction between the groups.
  • Raise funds for charitable events.

    Ways in which these objectives will be achieved:

  • A talk to be given by an elder on a cultural topic suggested by the youth representatives, followed by a question and answer session, at least once a year.
  • Each year celebrate one Hindu festival in addition to Diwali, which will provide as a learning experience.
  • Encourage the youth to communicate in konkani.
  • KYA to provide one form of entertainment each year at Diwali, after which a question and answer session to be held on a selected topic.
  • Participating in the national Hindu Youth festival.
  • Youth to write articles for the Vani, hold debates, discussions etc…
  • Provide interactive website via the net : message boards, online chats, discussion forums etc…
  • Set up peer/counsel groups with whom emotional problems can be discussed in confidence.
  • Youth representatives to phone up youth of new families and get them involved.
  • Organise a sporting event to raise money for charity; similarly other events such as sponsored walk, dandiya raas for a nominal fee etc..

    Role of Youth Representatives:

  • To interact with the youth within their geographical area in order to find their needs in meeting the objectives.
  • To interact amongst the reps and share your findings; come up with ideas and organise ways of meeting their needs.
  • Put forward proposals to the executive committee/adults as to the needs of the youth and ways of achieving it.
  • Work with the adult co-coordinator in organising activities and events.
  • Get more new youth involved in KYA.
